In practice, a telecode is assigned when someone registers for a phone-based service and needs a way to identify themselves each time they use it. Because the number is unique to the user, it functions as a lightweight security credential, similar to a PIN. Providers reference the telecode in their terms and conditions, privacy policy, and support materials so users understand how the code is issued, stored, and protected. Where a service handles personal data through the telecode, the provider's privacy and data-handling obligations apply to how that number is collected and used.

For example, a customer subscribing to a phone-based information service might be issued the telecode 4827193. To use the service they call the access line and enter that number to sign in. The provider then matches the telecode to the customer's account and grants access to the content they've paid for. If the service is offered through a website as well as by phone, the same telecode may let the user select and manage their subscription across both channels. Providers are expected to explain in plain language how a telecode is generated, how long it stays valid, and how a user can contact support to reset or cancel it.
