## What High Severity Means in a Contract

High Severity is a defined term used in agreements, particularly those governing information technology, data handling, and security, to classify the most serious category of incident that a party can experience or cause. When a contract labels an event as High Severity, it usually means the incident has caused, or is likely to cause, substantial disruption to systems that are essential to running the business, or has resulted in unauthorized external access to sensitive information.

The purpose of the classification is practical rather than decorative.
